About This Route
The Comrades Marathon is the world's oldest and largest ultramarathon: nearly 90 kilometres between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, run since 1921 and now drawing over 20,000 starters every June. The direction alternates — the Up Run grinding out of Durban, the Down Run hammering quads through Polly Shortts, Inchanga, Botha's Hill and Fields Hill toward the sea — and each of the Big Five hills has its own legend.
