Hardknott Pass is Britain's most feared piece of tarmac: barely two kilometres from Eskdale but averaging 13% with ramps at 33%, a single-track Roman road that hairpins up the fellside like a dare. It is the wall that decides the Fred Whitton Challenge at mile 98, and simply getting up it without a foot down is a cyclist's badge of honour.
